# Members and roles

> The people who administer a business account and the roles that decide what they can do.

**Members** administer a business account. Each member holds one role, and the role decides which account actions the member can take.

| Role | What it allows |
| - | - |
| `owner` | Full control, including transferring ownership. Exactly one per account. |
| `admin` | Adding and removing members and signers, and linking wallets. |
| `viewer` | Read-only access to the account. |

An account can also define custom roles. A custom role inherits its permissions from one of the built-in roles, and it cannot be deleted while a member still holds it. Governance requirements can name a custom role as an eligible approver or initiator.

  Members and signers are independent. Being an admin does not let someone sign, and being a signer does not grant admin rights. Grant each explicitly.

## Changing membership

Adding a member, removing a member, changing a member's role, and transferring ownership are all account actions that require [step-up authentication](/docs/business-accounts/step-up-auth) and can be covered by [governance](/docs/business-accounts/governance). Removing a member also revokes their key shares, which ends their ability to sign on every wallet they were a signer for.
